My Hip Surgeries

From the beginning…

  1. Oct 2004 Arthroscopic Labral Tear Debridement
  2. Feb 2006 Arthro/Open Periacetabular Osteotomy (PAO) and Femoral Neck Osteoplasty for Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI), Retroverted Acetabulum, Mild Lateral Dysplasia, Labral Debridement for “Floppy Labrum”
  3. Jan 2007 Arthro Cartilage Tear Debridement (”Floppy” Labrum Noted)
  4. Jan 2007 Arthro/Open Psoas Tenotomy and Hardware Removal (from the PAO)
  5. Dec 2007 Arthro/Open Psoas Bursectomy, Scar Tissue Removal, Labral and Cartilage Debridement, ASIS Osteotomy, Muscle Reattachment, Fiberwire and Ethibond Removal and Bursectomy (related to those)
  6. May 2008 Open Hardware and Bone Fragment Removal for Screw Sticking Out (2cm) and ASIS Nonunion, Bursectomy
  7. Feb 2009 Open/Arthro Removal of Bony Overgrowth at PAO Cut Site (superior pubic ramus) Medial projection was causing recurrent, painful snapping hip (not clear what was actually “snapping/grinding” though). Due to previous surgeries, psoas is much more medial than is normal…passing medial to the femoral head. Very small anterior labral tear, and the cartilage looked “pristine”.

ADDITIONAL SURGERIES:

Spring 2006: Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) Filter Placement, Subsequent IVC Filter Removal 1 month later for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Post-PAO

Summer 2006: Arthroscopic Shoulder Subacromial (A/C Joint) Decompression, Bursectomy

Spring 2007: Lumbar Fusion: Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF)

[...] Hip Surgeries I’ve Had [...]

3. Debbie - March 29, 2009

I have found a place here where I can come to and learn, smile and be inspired. I just had my 1st hip surgery as an adult ( 12 days ago at Stanford) after years of incrediable pain and well many misdiagnosis for a Acetabular Labral Tear. I am learning things I should have known…since I had Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis ( and 2 hip surgeries ) as a teen.

Thanks, Debbie

I’m going through the same thing… SCFE at 10 years old, 2 surgeries for that. My first and hopefully only arthroscopy as an adult was almost 2 months ago. I had FAI, labral tear, loose bodies, and synovitis mainly as a result of the SCFE as a child. And the suck part is that they never told me this could happen as an adult. They only said “you have an increased risk of arthritis in middle age.” (I am 30) I thought I had pulled a groin muscle for 3 months before I even decided to seek treatment!

So like you, I went through a long time of misdiagnoses (3 doctors) and pain that was “all in my head” until someone actually recommended an MRI arthrogram. I even had one doc accuse me of drug seeking because I said the percocet helped for the pain (um, duh?) He jammed a cortisone needle into my scar tissue without the aid of fluoroscopy. Don’t worry, though, he took it out halfway through, before he could do any lasting physical damage, and threw it away, saying “You can’t take the pain. There is nothing I or ANYONE ELSE can do for you.” Oh, and that lovely doc also said the SCFE was my fault for being “obese” as a kid (I was 10 pounds overweight!) Lets just say he should be glad I am not a litigious individual.

After almost 2 years of constant pain and accusations of being pretty much a big baby, I cried when I got the diagnosis, but only out of pure relief! I finally had the surgery and am having a slow but productive recovery. Still not walking on my own, but I have graduated to a cane, (it is pink and has flowers and that makes me happy) and I actually have hours of my life with NO PAIN at all! I developed an allergy to NSAIDs through all this so I can’t take any meds for inflammation, so it’s slow going sometimes on only Tylenol, but I am happy that in 4 months or so I will be back to “normal.”

The best of luck to you!!!

Beth

Wow – this is a lot of info! I too am struggling with hip, back, leg and psoas pain. It’s sad to say, but I’m glad to know I’m not alone. Chronic pain is something noone can understand until they experience it.

Have you tried botox to your psoas at all? I just had my pirifomous (sorry for the spelling) botoxed and that helped a fair bit, but there’s still something wrong… so I’m considering that option….

Good luck to you and if you have any info. to share that would be great!
